Single Cover

Single Cover Layout

Front Cover of single

Back Cover

I choose dark pink and light blue as the colour scheme for the single as these colours work well together and dark pink is a strong colour which features in the music video. The front cover of the album was inspired by David Guetta's album 'Nothing but the beat.' The strong solid colour on the background and the black and white photograph of the artist edited over the top with a shadow reflected on the back creates a very strong and eye-catching image.

Analysis of magazine adverts

Magazine advert for Florence and the Machine's CD 'Lungs'.

The advertisement has a wash-out of colour, making it look vintage and old. The artist is present and placed in the centre to attract the most attention, the image is also the same as used on the CD cover which allows the audience to identify with the advert. 'Florence + the Machine' is written in a curly font across the top of the advert, the artist is then seen through the middle and then 'Lungs' is read at the bottom. This is due to the route of Z structure, a technique used so that consumers view all the important parts of the advertisement first. The white font connotes purity which is further emphasised through the pale skin showing, 'Florence + the Machine' is a curly font to convey the name of artist and adds a feminine touch. 'Lungs' is written boldly to stand out, the image then portrays the name of the album as her lungs are on the outside of her body. This follows a principle of Goodwin's theory which is that there is a link between the lyrics and the visuals. At the bottom of the advert the date of release is shown, with a description of popular songs included in the album and the website, this is to persuade fans of other artists to buy the CD as they may be fans of the included songs.

Magazine advert for Arctic Monkeys CD 'AM'.

This advertisement uses grey colours in the background, the image is of a performance but with the main singer standing out in the middle. This long shot shows him looking superior and in control as the audience are pictured smaller and behind the star. 'Arctic Monkeys' is written in block white font to stand out, the white matches the bright lights in the background of the image. The date of release is shown in small red font and tour dates are presented underneath, tour dates are uncommon in magazine adverts. A website is shown at the bottom for more information and for tickets to the shows, this will attract people to go online and look as it is easily accessible.

Pictures

Noah's role

I was the all rounder of the group. I helped with directing and was there to consult with our main director. I would contribute on things such as certain shots I felt complimented the genre that we were trying to achieve with things such as lighting. I also came up with the costumes for the 2 main characters in the video and added in certain details to fit in with the genre such as product placement. When I was not co-directing or in front of the camera, I was operating things like the smoke machine or moving the sets around depending on what setting we wanted to achieve.
In the classroom I have a say on editing as well as researching further on things such as public opinion and exploring the genre as a whole in order to fully understand the genre and contribute my findings into our music video.

Tamara's role

My role was to star in the video alongside Waseem (the star), I had to dress up and dance in front of the camera on my own and with Waseem.

I also helped with the editing of the video, I synced a master shot and helped Libby with deciding if the shots were in time to the music. I gave ideas towards which filters to use on certain shots and effects to use such as slow motion. I made the questionnaire to research our target audience for the music video, the magazine advert and album cover then Noah helped to ask people the questions. I also gave ideas on which shots to use in the music video and how we could construct this into the shots.

Group Roles

Libby - Cinematographer, main editor, director, chose location.

Waseem - Star of video, co-editor, chose background actors.

Tamara - Starred in video, co-editor.

Noah - Background actor, costume, co-cinematographer, co-editor.

Comparison between student and professional

There is a significant difference between a students music video and a professional video.

This is a music video which is created by Group P1 01-2009/2010
http://01intromusicvideo10.blogspot.co.uk/
This video shows a group of males in a room dancing and using a range of effects to create emphasis, there is also a variety of shots to catch the audience. They also use a range of costumes which is timed correctly for the type of scene they film.

As you can see in this picture staken from the video it clearly shows an example of using a symmetry effect in the editing process. It was successfully achieved.

In this image of the star singing and successful lip syncing is achieved. This is a high angle shot of the star. They are utilising this shot on numerous occasions to show the males collectively.

This is a longshot of all the group involved in the music video. The star is mouthing the lyrics and the others are making timed gestures in relation to the lyrics.

This is a professional video of P Diddy-Tell me ft Christina Aguilera

In this video P Diddy is using a number of props and is being represented as a man with high status and charming characteristics. This is shown by the number of girls surrounding shots and the explicit shots of girls "Twerking" in the Mid-Close range shots in the video. There are also 3 different locations which P Diddy is in with different costumes reflecting the style of the scene. Also P Diddy has a star persona of his bling gold chain and his diamond earrings  He is shown in most of his videos as being very fashionable which targeted to the correct audience.

This picture shows P Diddy relaxing in a smart outfit on a comfortable leather chair. He also has many props next to him and a girl with revealing clothing is carrying out his commands.

In this image of P Diddy being pushed away by the speakers/wind there is an artificial use of the background and this is created by the green screen background and it successfully produced in editing.

Overall the professional video of P Diddy and Christina Aguilera is far better than the students video by the number of locations P Diddy uses throughout the video and constant editing on the beat which reflects the pace of the music. Also there is a storyline in the video that P Diddy is getting seduced by Christina Aguilera. In the students music video there is no edge given to the target audience of teenagers to middle aged people. They could have achieved a more professional look if they created a storyline instead of random shots.

Black and White Filter

In our video, we feel that to enhance the look of our video further, we will add filters to certain settings. One filter we have decided upon is the black and white filter while our star is standing in front of a white screen. We took inspiration from the Nelly, Pharrell and Nikki Minaj video in which one of the master shots was filmed with a black and white filter and white background. We feel the stripped back master shot of our star performing with a black and white filter with the white background will make for a very professional and aesthetically pleasing finish like the Nelly video.

This is where we changed the filters

Editing progression

For our second lesson we synced all the master shots with the music, and took out any footage with problem in the background. e.g. people looking at camera, dancing looking ineffective. This left us with a good amount of master shots in different settings so our next step is to add the club scene and silhouette shots. We will put these in by matching lyrics to the visual and applying slow motion to some of the dance shots.

Star Persona

The star persona of the star in our music video is represented as being cool and smart with the suit, sunglasses, headphones across his neck and the big watch. In the video the star is wearing the sunglasses all the way through which is the style similar to RnB and Hip-Hop artists in modern music videos. Such as:

Robin Thicke-Blurred Lines

In this video Robin Thicke is wearing a sharp suit with sunglasses, the way the star is presented is what we wanted to achieve in the video by the costume.

Throughout the video there is a white backdrop which we also used to emphasize the importance of the main star. By having this backdrop it also enabled us to focus more on lip syncing by giving a clearer image to the audience of what the star is saying.

Product Placement

Product placement has certainly become far more common in recent years now that artists and companies are trying to utilise social media websites such as YouTube or Facebook. because of the boom in artists promoting products, artists like Dr Dre are moving away from music itself and focusing more on the entrepreneurial side of music. For example with Dr Dre's Beats by Dre company. People are paying for his name and he has taken advantage of this. He is also incredibly well respected in the music industry for what he did for hip hop and a lot of artists are using his product in his video to be associated with such a big name as Dre. Almost all mainstream west coast hip hop videos have some sort of Beats by Dre product in their video and the company has branched out to more mainstream international artists such as David Guetta and Robin Thicke. Dr Dre changed product placement and opened the door for other electronics companies such as Sony Ericsson or Nokia.

Some artists use music videos for their own gain to promote products they are associated with for example, Pharrell Williams who regularly promotes his own clothing brand Billionaire Boys Club in his music videos or Jay-Z who wears Brooklyn Nets  basketball gear as he is a lifelong fan and also has shares in the franchise.
